It’s late autumn and all is quiet in the garden, except for our spring bulbs in our pots, beds and borders which may have given us a few short green shoots. It may not be springtime for many months but our spring bulbs are giving us a splendid little reminder of those longer and warmer days to come.

We should not be concerned by green shoots, this is quite normal, and in fact it’s a very good sign as it shows the spring bulbs have established roots and are healthy. To keep the spring bulb pots very happy, it is best to group them into a sheltered corner of the garden, which means the pots will be out of the worst of the weather. You can also put some chicken wire netting over the pots to stop hungry squirrels from pinching them.

The spring bulbs in beds and borders can also be covered in chicken wire netting. The netting can be removed in early spring once the threat of being dug up passes.

The spring bulbs and any green shoots will fall dormant over wintertime in readiness to send those flowers bursting upwards in springtime.

The spring bulbs are set and ready for action when the days grow longer and warmer in a few months’ time.

It’s that lovely time of year when we watch the garden enter a state of dormancy and for the green shoots of the spring bulbs to lift our spirits on cold, dark and shorts days and remind us that springtime will be here before we know it.
