Two years ago we had a serious ice storm and this maple tree split from its base to its branches. I was concerned it would die, but I’ve been enjoying watching the seam heal more and more each month. It seemed almost fully healed until we had a -17c cold snap last week, when this fresh split appeared along the exiting seam.
Is it hooped? Will it heal itself slowly again? Anything I can do to improve its chances of a comeback?

That’s a severe mechanical failure, it could heal but it will never fully recover and as it gains in canopy size the higher the likelihood it will be that it fails. The tree already has two codominant leads facing the opposite directions of the vertical crack, this tree is a hazard. You could technically try cabling the two main leads (recommend using an arborist) but that’s assuming it’ll properly heal from the frost crack. personally I’d look into having it removed or expect a trunk failure in the next 3 years
Yea. It’s life now is severely limited. Exactly how long is tough to predict. But that is definitely a serious structural issue.
