This is a 48” tall family heirloom. I know it needs to be repotted but the plant is too big to handle without breaking primary rooted stems. Suggestions? I live in northern metro Denver, Colorado so if there are any local experts or nurseries, please share.

My mother kept it at a north window in South Dakota and PINCHED THE SPENT BLOOMS OFF so it only flowered once in 20 years. I added grow lights this year in hopes of it waking up.

There are children and grandchildren of this mother plant everywhere – one of mine flowers early spring through late summer. Cuttings are great gifts!

  1. That’s impressive! Best way I’d repot it is to use a person or two to help lift it out of the pot and directly into the new pot. The stake it’s on might be established enough to just lift it out grabbing onto it (given that you loosen the soil a bit first). I repot small 4-5 foot trees myself by letting the soil dry out and then just lifting it out of the pot and into the new one

Add orchid spray to the care regimen and you’ll get peduncles. I have an heirloom carnosa I rescued from an estate sale almost 15 yrs ago full of gnarly wooded vines. It had to have been 20 yrs old even then. She trucked on for years with little attention until I finally had someone recommend orchid spray. In 6 months she started flowering. I was so excited I bought her grow lights. 2-3 yrs later she has about 10 peduncles that flower multiple times in a season.

If you repot, ask a friend for a hand and lay her out on a table with paper or something to catch soil and only go up an inch in pot size. Expect to lose a few leaves, but you may be surprised. Those ole girls have tough vines. Regardless, any loss you can try to propagate.
