We almost cut down our dogwood tree when we first moved into our house because it was a little scruffy/ugly but every single winter it feeds seemingly every bird and squirrel in a 5 mile radius and makes me so glad that we left it up!
Sometimes it’s just nice to be reminded that your garden and yard aren’t just for you
All those critters look so happy. What a nice winter spot for a little snack.

If you have room, add a Washington crab apple tree. They are about the same size as a dogwood. The fruit comes in the late fall but it is not edible for the birds until it has been frozen several times. This give late winter food for your birds to compliment the dogwood.
Those crab apples are often well fermented by the time the blue jays get to them. It is sort of fun to watch drunken blue jays squabble.

That’s awesome! What kind of dogwood is it? Thinking of adding some shrubs to the shade art of my backyard.

When I was a teen I would put out walnuts for the squirrels in our backyard and I would watch them bury it. When they left I would dig it up and bury it elsewhere. It was fun watching them come back to get their walnut and not find it. They would literally scratch their head. Felt like we were playing a game, sometimes they’d take the walnut and other times they’d bury it.

It’s great you left it and the wildlife use it freely, but it’s not a dogwood. It’s Crataegus sp. commonly called Hawthorn.

Can I give you all of my squirrels? They are little tomato terrorists and love digging holes all over my garden.
