Families can visit real Swedish reindeer as part of this festive experience in TamworthReindeer at Planters Garden Centre in TamworthReindeer at Planters Garden Centre in Tamworth

Looking for a Lapland Christmas experience without the hefty price tag?

A Tamworth garden centre has its own herd of Swedish reindeer that families can visit as part of its festive celebrations.

Planters Garden Centre has a traditional decorated TiPi where children can craft their own plush reindeer to take home plus reindeer food to scatter on Christmas Eve.

And, after writing a Christmas wish to hang on the Christmas tree, there’s a chance to meet Santa Claus in his grotto before walking through a herd of reindeer, with time to stop and take photos and get close to the animals.

It takes place on weekends in December and then on December 22, 23 and 24, which is the final day of the grotto.

A spokesman for Planters said: “We own a small herd of female reindeer, which any reindeer you see in our centres belong to. Our original reindeer were born in Sweden in May 2012. In Sweden, reindeer are kept in herds and are farmed for meat and fur like we keep cattle in the UK.

“Our original reindeer arrived with us in February 2013 and, like the entire herd, they are kept on our family-owned farm in Tamworth.

“Our reindeer are constantly monitored, thanks to them being on our own family farm.

“They are on a special diet of barley straw and specific reindeer dried pellets, with the occasional treat of ‘reindeer’ moss bought in from Lapland. They also have fresh water all of the time, and their water trough is cleaned out daily.

“Reindeer are not used to a rich diet, especially lush grass and we therefore introduce grazing gradually. All this leads to them getting exactly what they need from their food so that they can thrive.”

The coffee shop is serving gingerbread lattes, mint hot chocolates, Irish cream lattes and cherry and pistachio hot chocolates. And every child receives a toy from Father Christmas. Find out more and book tickets via the Planters website.

Visitors are advised to wear warm clothes.
