An artist who is also a trained landscape architect, Erika Huddleston has previously created series of plein-air paintings based on outdoor research residencies at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, the Shoal Creek greenbelt in Austin and Jemison Park outside Birmingham, Ala.
Now for “The Painter’s Garden” at Artspace111 in Fort Worth, she depicts her own garden in 10 easel-size oil paintings. In each of them, a close-in perspective fills the greater part of the visual field with plants that sprawl across the canvas in abundant variety, woven together in naturally occurring patterns.

Erika Huddleston’s “Painter’s Garden II” is on display at Artspace111 in Fort Worth.

Bright dabs of red turk’s cap and purple beautyberry punctuate the space in front of broad swaths of pale grasses like switchgrass and blue grama, spread across the background. Huddleston shows with great élan that, although not the most gaudily spectacular of flora, North Texas plant species have their share of elegant integrity.
