My mom had an aloe plant on a shelf in the bathroom. Just walked into the bathroom, and aloe leaves and orange/red goo have gone shooting all over the place. It smells like rotting bell peppers.

Anyone know what on earth happened? I’m guessing some kind of bacterial infection made the pulp ferment until it popped?

Has anyone seen this before? Everything I find when I search for Aloe “exploding” is stuff about it having an explosion of growth. Everything I’ve found about red/orange leakage from Aloe is thin transparent red liquid— never chunky opaque stuff that looks almost like bad vodka sauce.

I assume it rotted and the gas got trapped in the leaves somehow and eventually the pressure built up enough to tear everything apart and send it flying. Eggs do the same thing.🤢

That’s wild! It rotted because that spot is too dark for it. Aloes need a lot of light

Do you have pets? Maybe the rotting odor was appealing? Gosh that’s crazy if it exploded. Interesting. Does the pot have drainage? Maybe pressure built up? I’ve seen the sap turn red when it’s oxidized from leaf getting damaged or rotting. This would have freaked me out lol.
