Hi all, I picked up these 2 flower pots for my girlfriend recently and just realized I have

A- no idea what plant they are
B- no idea how to take care of them (ie: watering frequency, etc)

I was wondering if you guys could do some or your magic and help me out with some answers

Christmas cacti! They actually prefer neglect over too much attention.

Looks like Thanksgiving cactus. I’ve kept one alive for a few years on a windowsill with extremely careless and happenstance watering. Hopefully you get to enjoy those seasonal blooms for years to come!

  3. Not Christmas cactus, that has a differently-shaped leaf. This is a Thanksgiving cactus, both bloom at about the same time, but Xmas cactus tends to be a little later (hence the name). Both are in the *Schlumbergera* genus. Easy to care for.

So these types of plants don’t get much attention

They do like a little more watering during blooming stage. But neglect seems to work for me 👍🏻

Holiday cactus (Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter depending on the stem segment shapes)

This is a tropical succulent from South America that likes to grow in rock, tree, or random nooks. Probably one of the easiest plants next to pothos or philodendron. The easy care is to water when it starts drying out and keep it *near* a window with sun (not in)

My way: terracotta pots, cactus soil mix (Miracle Gro), bright/indirect light, temps between 70° – 40°, water when dry-ish

Also, you can cross pollinate them to make cactus fruits and try to make your own flower varieties!

Thanksgiving Cactus. To tell the difference:

Thankgiving cactus leaves have points like the T in Thanksgiving.

Christmas cactus leaves have rounded edges like the C in Christmas.

    Easter for Everything else.
