PLANS to convert a disused Oxgangs bowling green have been submitted to the City of Edinburgh Council.

Colinton Mains Bowling Club closed its doors in 2019 and passed into the hands of the council.

Explaining the proposal, the application stated that “the garden will include raised beds.

“It will include a polytunnel to extend the range of crops It will be served by a couple of bespoke, timber sheds, one for congregating and preparing refreshments and the second for tool storage.

“Both sheds will harvest rainwater which will be stored for use on the garden. All existing trees and hedges will be retained.”

Dr Scott Arthur, MP for Edinburgh South West, welcomed the plans in a social media post.

Dr Arthur, who played one of the last games at the bowling green in 2018, explained different ideas that had circled after the club’s closure.

He said: “The plan was always to build homes there, at one point, even supported accommodation for adults with autism was proposed.

“Personally, I’d prefer housing, but a garden could be a fantastic asset, they work brilliantly in Wester Hailes & Chesser.”

Dr Arthur served as the councillor for Colinton/Fairmilehead from 2017 until his election to Westminster in 2024.

The bowling club was formed in 1938 and was a hub of the Colinton community.

The site has attracted anti-social behaviour, with portable cabins being set on fire multiple times in 2021 before being removed.
