A POP-UP winter garden where Islanders can reflect and remember a loved one while supporting a local charity opened in town yesterday.
Maillards Funeral Directors has announced the return of its ‘Christmas Memory Garden’, now in its fourth year, which forms part of the company’s ‘Celebrating Life’ initiative.
It will be open at 19 Bath Street for the rest of this week from 9am to 6pm.
Visitors can write a memory or message for someone they have lost and place it on one of the remembrance trees for a minimum £2 donation to charity.
This year the funds are being raised in support of Philip’s Footprints, which supports bereaved parents after the loss of a baby or child.
The charity’s founder, Jo Nash, said: “At a time, which is all about coming together to celebrate, Christmas can also be a painful reminder of all those loved ones who are missing from our lives.”
She added: “The Christmas Memory Garden is a beautiful invitation to pause and remember them, recognising that our connection doesn’t end with death but lives on in the love we still carry for them.”
Previous iterations of the memory garden have raised funds for various charities including Dementia Jersey and Friends of SCBU (Special Care Baby Unit).
Maillards managing director Julian de la Cour said: “Christmas can be a joyful time for many, but for others it can bring a sense of absence.”
He continued: “Our Christmas Memory Garden gives people an opportunity to honour their loved ones in a way that feels personal and meaningful.
“We’re proud to continue offering this Celebrating Life initiative to the local community and to support the important work of Philip’s Footprints.”
