Hi all,
I've recently inherited this FLF and it was growing two new leaves over the summer, but when it hit "winter" (Coastal Southern California), within the last two weeks 2x leaves dropped and the baby leaf that was growing from the top died.
I was wondering if it was due to either:
- Too much water
- I ran the central heat and literally witnessed a leaf fall
- The skylight is filtering too much light?
- A combination of all 3?
Since then I've stopped running central heating and have the humidifier running non-stop. Temperatures downstairs range from 55F-65F
Thanks for the help!

Wow what a beautiful tree! It could be the opposite of what you’re thinking. I see the dark brown edges of the leaves on the bottom and suspect for a tree of that size it’s being underwatered. But not to worry this is an easy fix! I recommend making sure to water when the top inches of soil are dry and ensure all the soil is soaked and drains really well out the bottom drainage holes. Then wait to water again when the top inches of soil are dry. This should be around every 7-10 days or so.
Do you think the area is getting too cold? If it is staying around 55/60 that would be too cold for the plant and can cause the leaves to turn a dark brown/black. What a beautiful space for it – the light is wonderful with the skylights!
FLF are notoriously fussy.
Watering is super important. Do not follow typical watering advice. FLF like to become bone dry, then drenched. When I used this watering routine, my FLF thrived and stopped being difficult.
Mine is fine with being near a vent, doesn’t seem to affect it.
They don’t like being moved and don’t like changes to water routine.
