The popular school garden program “Kids an die Knolle” of the German Potato Trade Association (DKHV) will relaunch in 2026. Teachers, educators, and their classes or groups are warmly invited to participate. Schools and educational institutions can now register and secure 5 kg of free seed potatoes for their own school garden. The registration deadline is 15 February 2026.

For over 15 years, the project has inspired children with the fascination of potatoes, with enthusiasm growing steadily. Around 700 schools participate each year, reporting motivated classes, successful harvests, and valuable learning experiences. Thanks to the support of the Landwirtschaftliche Rentenbank, children accompany the entire journey of the potato, from planting and caring for the crop to harvesting their own potatoes.

When the harvest finally makes its way into the kitchen, the experience becomes even more memorable: children cook together and gain a tangible understanding of the value of food, nature, and sustainable actions.

The DKHV provides the seed potatoes free of charge and offers accompanying teaching materials, developed in cooperation with information.medien.agrar e.V. (i.m.a). These materials support educators in the classroom and provide accessible background information about potatoes. In addition, the digital learning module “Starke Knolle” on Bildungsbissen.de offers a modern, interactive resource that further enriches lesson planning.

The DKHV looks forward to shaping another successful potato year in 2026 together with dedicated teachers, educators, and curious students.
