I need to trim this tree to be at least 5 feet from the roof for insurance. I noticed that it doesn't look very healthy though. It has peeling bark and is starting to grow mushrooms. Is this tree going to totally die? If not, any tips for trimming it in a way that won't kill it? I can't wait for the optimal season since I need insurance coverage now.

I would personally remove it & plant something different in that slot. Something much smaller & insurance friendly given how close to the house the location is.

Not worth keeping – right tree, wrong place.
