[Music] hi everyone it’s Michelle in Illinois and garden zone 5 welcome so today we have things to do out in the garden it is the first weekend in March it is beautiful out I wanted to get back outside I picked up some roles both at Home Depot and Lowe’s the other night so I to get those potted up this morning and then we’re going to get those move back into the house and start giving them a jump start so when our actual last frost date is at the end of April they’ll already be growing and I can put them out in the new cut flower garden and um they will Bloom earlier the other thing that I picked up were these little violas yesterday at my local Garden Center they had them in so too cold to have outside but I’m going to pot those up for an arrangement to take in the house so I’m going to have you be with me to do that too and then the third thing that I did was I was out thrifting and I like to Thrift for garden decor to add to my garden and I found I had been looking for a bird house and I had some inspiration photos I’ll show you one here that I liked I really like that white bird house with the copper roof and I thought maybe I could Thrift something that I could do similar and DIY it so I came came across this birdhouse when I was out thrifting a few weeks ago and I thought what the heck I’m going to give it a try and so I want to show you that and show you the process and how it turned out and let me know what you think so come along with me let’s get going we’re going to do some of this outside we’re going to go into the garden house for some of it we’re just going to have a great time on this beautiful day so the first thing we’re going to do is we are going to fill up our pot so I’m going to move this out of the way and I have these terracotta pots that I’m going to fill up to put the bulbs in and I bought new soil so we’re going to put some potting soil in and I thought we would do this outside cuz it would be less messy T it taking it inside the garden house and I’m not sure if I’ll need three or four so we may start with three and then see if we need to add more and then this is the cute little container that I have I thrifted it’s super heavy um a couple years ago and it’s it looks kind of like unique stone um and it almost feels like it’s concrete cuz it’s so heavy but it’s that dark dark green and I just think it’s really cute and I think this will be a nice holder for the violas so we’ll add some dirt to this and I’ll need to add more two probably so we got our dirt so let’s head into the garden house and get these potted up so what I picked up let me show you first so these were from Home Depot and I picked up two different sets of Lies now this is double lies and there was three for $10 and then we have just the single there was six for $10 in this one so I haven’t tried this brand before and then I got dalas at um Lowe’s they had tons of different kinds of peie bulbs if you want to grow panies this year I think they’re going to be super popular um being the flower they picked it as the flower of the Year this year so there was lots of panies to pick from there was um a bunch of different Lily to pick from uh lots of dalas to pick from they had a sby they normally have elephant ears so pretty big selection the dalas I picked to grow are I picked a pastel mix which had three bulbs for $10 and then I picked a um this one was one bulb for $6.98 and it’s called crazy love and it’s a real pretty light lavender with that Whitey white petals with the lavender tinge on it one other package that had a pretty like salmon pink color and um this has two bulbs in it for $10 and I’m not sure how to pronounce this I’ll put the name on the screen but um so anyway what I wanted to do I was researching I went on the Chicago Botanical Garden website to see what I could do with dalas if I could do anything because if I wait and put these out um I think the package said I don’t recall but it was quite a long time before they actually start growing and previously last year when I grew dalas I bought them as little plants and then put them out in the garden so to start them like this I thought well is there any way I can start them early and sure enough there is um they said to go ahead and start them now and then put them inside or put in my case put them in somewhere warm where they’re going to get some done um 6 to 8 weeks before your last frost dat so let’s take these out of the package and see how they look wow look at that guys so that’s a pretty nice that’s one here’s two and then there’s three so there is those three that’s how quick that was to pot those up and like I said we’ll water those in let’s switch out here and these Pots if you like these pots I think you can still find them at Home Depot they’re a nice size okay so this was just one bulb and this is the crazy love and look how big that is that is huge when I researched uh the Botanical center said to put them in an 8 in pot and this is bigger than an 8 in pot of course let’s see how these look oh These are nice so this is the oh look at that one guys it’s already starting it’s got a little can you see that it’s got a little tip on it already so now I’ll show you the footage from the other day of spray painting the little bird house and then let me show you how it turned out and then we still need to plant up the cute little violas to take inside [Music] [Applause] [Music] so what do you think guys this is how it turned out I think it turned out awesome same day I was thrifting for this I came across this little thing I decided to put these together so I tried to take the ball off and it did come off and then I have this nice big face that I’m going to glue I think the birdhouse onto and what do you think is that not adorable so be on the lookout when you’re out thrifting for your garden stuff um always think if it’s not something that you like that originally like when I first looked at it I actually walked by it because I was like H that color wouldn’t work and then it dawned on me hey what about spray painting it and and I think it just looks adorable I’m always thrilled when I find cute things out that’ll work in the garden that I can do a little bit of DIY to next let’s get back into planting up and let’s plant up the violas okay so we have a little bit of potting soil in our um container I didn’t put much because I think with all the potting soil that’s in these I won’t need that much um the one thing thing about this is as you can see let me tilt it so you can see it’s more it’s deeper in the middle and then it gradually slopes on the sides so there isn’t a whole lot of space in in this so let’s see how much we can do oh there’s some nice roots on that I ended up picking up two that are more like um a pinky lavender color that I’m going to put on each side and then this is a white one that I’ll put here in the middle and these were kind of mixed in so they might end up even uh when some of them bloom more they may have different colors cuz like one of them I was looking at yesterday it was the lavender color but then it had one random orange flower in it too so that it may be the same thing once these all start blooming I may be surprised and get some different colors than what I thought I got oh yeah guys I think this will look really pretty inside uh my roses that I put in the community post and if you’re not part of our community you want to join subscribe because I post a lot during the week in the community post and give you updates and behind the scenes stuff and I had posted a couple days ago the video from last week where I did the Q&A I had some really pretty um pink rose and ostra Mariam lies so I’m thinking before long that’s going to be done and I’ll want something new on the island and I thought this would just look beautiful out on the island and give a little nod to spring since it’s right around the the corner but if you’re liking this please like share and sub subscribe and I will see you next week if you need more Garden inspiration check out these videos next [Music]

Have you started your summer bulbs early inside? What do you think of the birdhouse?🙂🪻🐦
Hi Michelle love what you did with the bird house it looks amazing!!
Hi Michelle, where did you get those terra cotta pots with the ruffled rims? They’re so pretty! I’m glad you are in zone 5 in Illinois like me😀
I know cost is always a big issue for all of us gardeners, but I wish you (& all the others too) would shop at local garden centers rather than the big box stores. Local garden centers are usually locally owned & profit stays in our own communities. Big box stores are not local & profit goes far away from home. Thanks.
Hi! Thank you for a fun video. The birdhouse and the potted violas are lovely!
I love the clay pots. Do you mind telling me where you find those?
New subscriber here. I love how your bird house turned out. I also love to thrift and recreate items. My husband built a birdhouse for me and I plan to mod podge blue/white toile paper napkins on it🪴
I Love your Birdhouse! You did a Great Job on it! 👍🏻
Hi, IL here too. In past seasons I have started caladiums inside, and have wished I started Dahlias. Lillies tend to do fine, and winter over, so I add some each year.
