A legendary TV presenter has revealed she is stepping down from her iconic role after nearly 40 years on our screens. Jane Edmanson has been on Gardening Australia since the show started in 1990 and has been presenting at the ABC since the late ’80s.

Since 2018, she has been the only original cast member left on the weekly gardening show. But she will reveal to host Costa Georgiadis in tonight’s (November 28) episode that she is packing up her tools and enjoying her twilight years.

“It’s time,” she will say, according to TV Tonight.

“I’m retiring, although I don’t like that word.

“I am retiring from Gardening Australia, having done it for so many years, and it makes me feel really, really proud and humble.

“It’s been a pleasure for me for so many years to present what I do on the programme, but tide’s time, and I will move on and do other things within the horticultural world, and still see you and all the lovely faces on the telly. It’ll be just lovely.

“But [the] time’s right.”

Costa praised her dedication to the show over all these decades and said she has made an incredible impact on the industry.

He said that Jane leaving is the “end of an era”, and that she has “set a wonderful benchmark for generations”.

In the episode, Jane explained that her parents were the ones who inspired her to go into gardening, with her dad being a horticulturalist and her mum having “very fine” green thumb.

But when she was getting into the industry, she revealed there weren’t many women working at nurseries, and she had to “cajole” her way into the job at first.

While she might be might not be giving any new advice, tricks, or tips on Gardening Australia, Jane encouraged everyone to get interested in plants, gardening, and their backyard.

“There’s a lot of good things happening with young people coming up and students learning all about horticulture and becoming gardeners themselves, and that’s the really important thing,” she said.

“If I can end with one last little thing: keep digging.

“Keep putting plants in the ground. It doesn’t matter, just keep doing it, and you’ll get so much satisfaction, because it is a lovely, lovely vocation for me for so long, but also for anyone, just as amateur gardeners, to enjoy their garden.”

Friday’s episode of Gardening Australia will be a tribute to Jane’s tireless efforts over the last 38 years.

You can catch it on the ABC at 7:30pm AEDT.
