SANTA CRUZ COUNTY
Volunteer days on the farm slated for December
Cabrillo Cottage Farms and Birdsong Orchards will be hosting a volunteer weekend to celebrate the renewal of the roses. This event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days, Dec. 6 at Birdsong Orchards, 613 Lakeview Road in Watsonville, and Dec. 7 at Cabrillo Cottage Farms, 4461 Porter Gulch Road, Aptos.
These two days will be specifically focused on the renewal of roses. If you are a grower of many roses or tend to a single rose plant, the renewal of the rose is the same process for everyone. It begins in the dormant season, when the plant begins to go to sleep; we preserve its energy and prune what is no longer needed on the plant from the past growing season. We put the plant to sleep by preparing a nice clean bed by removing weeds, unnecessary canes, unwanted root stock and debris from the bottom of the plants.
Please sign up so the farms can have a headcount and prepare a great day for you. The day will include tool cleaning, rose pruning workshop and rose pruning. Remember to bring the following: water bottle, snacks, sunscreen, sun hat, sturdy close-toed shoes, comfortable layered work clothes, hand pruners, loppers and gloves.
Sign up for volunteer days at birdsongorchards.com/pages/volunteering-at-the-farm.
