The Seattle Japanese Garden is a 3.5-acre stroll garden located at the south end of the Washington Park Arboretum. The idea for creating a Japanese garden in Seattle dates back to 1909, during the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exhibition, but it wasn’t until 1957 that plans truly moved forward when the Arboretum Foundation and the University of Washington raised funds. The garden was designed by Kiyoshi Inoshita, with world-renowned landscape architect Juki Iida overseeing construction and personally selecting many of the large granite stones. After years of planning and careful work, the garden officially opened to the public in June 1960.

Today, the Seattle Japanese Garden is jointly managed by Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Arboretum Foundation. Since 2016, the Arboretum Foundation has taken on primary responsibility for programming, fundraising, and outreach, while Parks and Rec continues to handle much of the maintenance and oversight. This collaboration helps preserve the garden’s beauty and cultural significance for generations to come.
