BAGUIO CITY – Swedish Ambassador to the Philippines Ana Ferry was impressed with how the Botanical Garden, especially the Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association (PMSEA) Garden, is being preserved and protected to enhance the state of the environment and promote endemic species of flowers and trees.

Ferry toured the Botanical Garden and the PMSEA Garden as part of her second visit to the country’s Summer Capital during her tour of duty as Sweden’s ambassador to the Philippines.

She was accompanied by PMSEA officials headed by Luis R. Sarmiento, ASEAN Engineer.

Ambassador Ferry claimed that the Botanical Garden could also be likened to an area in southern Sweden where flowers and trees are being taken care of and serving as one of the major tourist destinations in their country.

The Swedish ambassador is in the city as one of the guests during the 71st Annual National Mine Safety and Environment Conference spearheaded by the PMSEA with the city serving as a gracious host over the past seven decades.

Aside from visiting the Botanical Park and the PMSEA Garden, Ambassador Ferry also visited the Easter Weaving where she was also impressed with the way the weaving industry is being practiced for intergenerational transmission of indigenous knowledge.

Further, she pointed out that Cordillerans should sustain the gains of the ongoing efforts in preserving their rich culture, heritage and tradition as it will definitely contribute in enhancing their identity as indigenous peoples worthy of being given recognition.

She assured the support of Swedish companies in helping the country’s mining sector to achieve responsible mining practices that will allow safe and secure mining in the different parts of the country and making the industry adopt to digitalization that will pave the way for safer, sustainable and efficient production in the future.

Swedish mining companies are known for their best practices in terms of digitalization and partnership with indigenous peoples that have made the country one of the major mining communities in the European Union over the past several years. By Dexter A. See
