The tuber of the scutellaria radiata does not grow in a circular shape from a single center.

As it grows and experiences internal pressure (extension), the cork layer of the epidermis expands along a crack pattern.

These cracks are typically:
• radial, radiating from the center;
• oval, creating two stress centers;
• oval, which naturally swells at both ends, forming a two-lobed structure, or an ∞ shape.
