RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Multiple fire crews responded to a structure fire at Reptile Gardens overnight. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered an active fire in a detached agricultural shelter. Heavy fire and smoke conditions extended into the ceiling and roof of the structure.
The firefighters were able to stop the spread of the fire before it could affect any nearby vegetation. No injuries to firefighters or civilians were reported. According to a press release, an undetermined number of alligators and tortoises perished.
Rockerville Volunteer Fire Department released a statement on their Facebook page that says in part.
“Rockerville units were paged for a structure fire at 1241 this morning at Reptile Gardens. The structure on fire housed some of the reptiles. Resources are still on scene but will be released shortly. An official press release will be provided later today.”

Early this morning, around 1:30 am, a structure fire was reported at Reptile Gardens. The fire was primarily on the South side of the building. KOTA Territory News confirmed the fire was still ongoing as of 3 am this morning. We will continue to update as more information becomes available.
