Countless people adore having bees in their garden because it benefits their crops enormously. Bees are crucial pollinators which help produce more fruit, vegetables and seeds, leading to a thriving outdoor space.

They’re indispensable for the reproduction of numerous plants and support the local ecosystem. The pollinators also contribute to the biodiversity of your garden and the broader environment. Now one gardener has disclosed how planting one particular bulb can draw busy bees to your crops. TikTok user @gardensbylily kicked off her video by showing followers the “two things” she will be planting in November, one of which is brilliant for your other crops.

She explained garlic and spring flower bulbs are the two items to plant now if you want to set yourself up for success come next spring. Here is what you need to know.

1. Garlic

The gardener continued: “First of all, garlic. It’s the perfect time to plant garlic for next year. You break them into separate cloves and then you put them pointy side up and just stick them into the Earth.

“So easy and next year you’re gonna have loads of big bulbs of garlic.”

Planting garlic this month is amazing as it already requires a period of cold weather to develop into a robust bulb.

The chilly temperatures of November trigger the essential hormonal changes for proper bulb formation, while also giving the plant a lengthy growing season to establish strong roots before the main growth spurt in spring.

Lily added: “And secondly, I’m planting some spring flower bulbs, like tulips and other things so they’re ready for early spring to attract pollinators, so hopefully my zucchini next year will be a little bit more successful.

“Then I just add a little bit more compost to make it nutrient dense, water it and then you’re done for November.”

Once more, sowing these during November can prove perfect as it allows the roots sufficient time to get established in the still-mild earth before winter arrives, while the chilly soil stops early sprouting and disease.

It’s also worth mentioning this cold spell is essential for the bulbs since experiencing a chilling phase is crucial for them to flower brilliantly come spring.

However, sowing too soon can result in fragile shoots that get harmed by frost.

Why is it crucial to sow particular vegetables in November?

There are cold-hardy crops such as leafy vegetables (lettuce, spinach and kale), underground vegetables (carrots, beetroots and radishes), and onion family plants (garlic and shallots) which are perfect to sow right now.

Furthermore, November presents an excellent opportunity to plant spring-blooming bulbs and winter bedding varieties.
