A firm no to all forms of discrimination and gender-based violence, particularly against women. Thus, three hundred students from the Foiso Fois art and music high school in Cagliari, located on Via Bixio in Pirri, planted 15 trees (five laurel trees and ten holm oak trees), donated free of charge by the Forestas Regional Agency.
The plants were placed in the institute’s green area, where the “Garden of Art and Love” was inaugurated in memory of the women victims of femicide. Thus, the plant becomes a symbol of rebirth and a living memory of women whose lives were ended too soon and violently. The event was attended by volunteers from the “Luna e Sole” association, including President Marinella Canu, and volunteers from Cittadinanzattiva, led by Carlo Veglio. Before planting the plants, all the students and teachers, coordinated by the site representative Barbara Ardau, observed a minute of silence and then dedicated the photo and names of, among others, Yara Gambiraso, Cinzia Pinna, Marta Deligia (the young woman from Villacidro killed by her ex in 2013), Dajela Neza, Elisa Claps, Francesca Deidda from San Sperate, Roberta Zedda (the doctor from Sanluri killed in Solarussa on 3 July 2003 during her medical shift).
The initiative is part of the “Respect and Love” project: a march with a common thread, a garden of art and love, a flash mob, and other awareness-raising initiatives against violence against women and gender-based violence. The Foiso Fois high school, directed by Headmistress Nicoletta Rossi, is at the forefront of these initiatives.
The project is coordinated by teachers Gian Luigi Pittau, Stefano Zorco, Barbara Ardau, and Carla Falqui and has been carried out for years to spread a culture of awareness of respect for human rights, gender differences, and the fight against all forms of discrimination.
“Violence,” explains Professor Gian Luigi Pittau, “is a scourge of our society that must be eradicated once and for all, with every effort possible. Our students are sensitive to the issue and have much to teach us. Engaging the younger generations in the fight for respect for human rights and against all forms of discrimination is essential.”
On November 21st, meeting at 9:00 a.m. in Via Roma in Cagliari, under the Regional Palace (the conclusion is in Piazza Garibaldi), three hundred students participated in the march with the red thread organized by the associations “Luna e Sole”, “Cittadinanzattiva” and the “Una, nessuna, centomila” foundation.
During the demonstration, the names of all the victims of femicide in Italy in 2025 were read, and a message condemning all forms of violence will be heard from Piazza Garibaldi through art and music.
“With these initiatives,” emphasizes Marinella Canu, president of the Luna e Sole association, “we want to reiterate our firm opposition to violence against women. Our counseling center is on the front lines, answering the many women’s pleas for help.”
Carlo Veglio of Cittadinanzattiva echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the value of planting trees: “The trees represent the living memory of the victims, rebirth and hope, a commitment that continues over time, and the necessary daily care.”
“Just as a tree requires constant care (water, sun, protection, pruning) to grow strong and bear fruit,” explain teachers, students, and volunteers, “so the fight against violence against women needs to be addressed every day with attention, education, vigilance, and collective commitment.”
