The chives I grew taste of nothing. What did I do wrong? Grew in some standard potting soil from home Depot in one of those stacked strawberry planters.

Lmao. Chives are cylindrical. These are blades of grass.

  2. Those do not look like chives. Chives have a round blade

  3. readymeercat

Maybe you cut them too late. Mine lose their flavor as soon as the temps warm up.

  4. washburncincy

Have you tried chopping them and having Reddit judge your cuts before tasting them?

  5. UnholyTomorrow

They are clearly chives. Just flattened from holding or pressing down on them I’m guessing.

Could be you waited too long to harvest. The older they get they lose some flavor. Or soil pH balance. You may want to test the level next time and make sure it’s not too acidic.

You have garlic chives(flat). I’ve found them much less flavorful than onion chives (round).

  7. Away_Wrangler_9796

Are they faintly garlicky? They look like garlic chives to me.

  8. EvilEtienne

Give them to the guy cutting chives every day until Reddit says they’re perfect. 🤪

  9. many say its grass but could it be chinese chives?

  10. So there seems to be a bit of a misunderstanding in this thread that chives are always cylindrical, but that is not the case. [Over time, and especially after multiple harvests, chives will start to grow flat leaves](https://planyourpatch.com/why-do-my-chives-look-like-grass-is-there-something-wrong/) additionally [garlic chives grow with flatter leaves, that look like grass](https://herbgardengal.com/chives-vs-garlic-chives/).

As for the taste, chives can lose flavor or become bitter after flowering, much like other vegetables and leafy greens.

If they’re garlic chives, the flavor is very subtle. It’s more of a grassy garlic flavor. Garlic chives have white flowers instead of purple, so you’ll be able to tell pretty clearly when they bloom.

Has anyone every seen garlic chives before.

chives grow tubular hollow leaves that smell and taste mildly oniony, whereas GARLIC CHIVES grow wider flat leaves that taste mildly garlicy.

  13. florafiend

Everyone saying “chives are round” have clearly never ground garlic chives.

Do a tiny bit of research.

Op- I think you just aren’t used to the more subtle flavor of garlic chives. Just wait till they bloom! The flowers are an amazing salad or stir-fry garnish.

  14. BookLuvr7

If they’re flat, not hollow, or don’t smell like onions, they’re probably grass.

I thought Chef was having a seriously bad day for a second

  16. This is giving me vibes of “growing a cup of chives everyday until reddit says they’re perfect”

  17. Krickett72

Thats like the green onions I grew last year. They grew really well but tasted like nothing.

  18. CupOfLifeNoodlez

Let the potting mix dry out between Watering. It should stress the plant a bit and that is when aromatic plants produce oils that taste yummy. I do this with a lot before using my herbs.

Another example of why botanical names are important. Common names are often misleading.

Are you experiencing allergies and is your sense of smell affected? Is there any smell of garlic at all? Are you 100% sure that is where you planted the chives? If you heat the chives does the smell increase?

In a overview way, fresh, new, well hydrated growth can be less scented, especially after a growth spurt. Also, generally harvesting first thing in the morning can be better for scented crops than later in the day.

O/t but garlic scapes are awesome. Throw a bunch of garlic in a sandy ditch now and in the spring you’ll have fantastic garlicky greens.

  22. SharpEnd69

In Chinese cuisine garlic chives are used more like a green vegetable and less like an herb so you can try thinking of them that way. A spinach that’s already got some seasoning on it.

  23. NorridAU

Well dang, with the current Reddit meta I thought this was R/coking going field-to-kitchen

  24. DontWatchPornREADit

Did it flower? Sometimes after flowering ive found the taste gets bland

  25. thatguywriteb

Try cutting with a duller knife and/or crushing them to see if that releases a little more aromatics/flavor.

  26. PinchePlantPussy

Pick them sooner. Might need to be super young to enjoy the flavor

  27. peonyseahorse

Garlic chives are super strong. In fact, I usually only cook with it for family and people who are 100% ok with authentic Asian cooking and flavors.

However, would I use these chives for a baked potato or other more western dishes that call for chives, probably not.

For a second I thought this was the “I’m chopping chives every day until reddit says they’re perfect” guy & I was gonna rage bc I thought I muted that sub.

I thought I was on r/kitchenconfidential for a minute and u/f1exican was letting us down lol

Soil health will also improve the flavor of your herbs and vegetables.

But yeah, garlic chives can also be more mild.

  31. SignApprehensive3544

Garlic chives, I think. My mom is Vietnamese and uses them in summer rolls or on top of some noodle soup dishes. Worst smelling farts ever.
