Now is the time to plan ahead and plant certain bulbs with an expert claiming ‘you’ll thank yourself come spring’Important jobs can be done in the garden in colder monthsImportant jobs can be done in the garden in colder months(Image: Shared Content Unit)

A gardening expert is urging people to priorities two outdoor tasks now in what is described as the ‘perfect season’ to prepare for the months ahead. While this part of year is a time for gardens to rest and gather strength for the winter to come – and many of us like to tuck up during the chilly weather too – it is also an opportunity to plant certain bulbs in good time for spring.

Luke Newnes, a gardening expert at homeware shop Hillarys, says it is important to have a light touch in our gardens as conditions become cooler and damper but there are two tasks we should prioritise now, reports The Express. He said: “Winter is a time to let parts of your garden rest.

“Avoid heavy pruning now – cutting back too much can expose plants to frost damage. Likewise, don’t dig up soil unnecessarily.

“Disturbing the ground can harm its structure when it’s cold and wet.” But he added: “This is the perfect season for tidying and planning.”

While wildlife experts encourage people to leave fallen leaves in many areas as they can provide vital shelter for over-wintering bees and other pollinators, leaves can be cleared from lawns and paths to prevent rot and slippery surfaces.

Mr Newnes added: “It’s also a great time to clean and sharpen your tools – you’ll thank yourself come spring.” As well as being a good idea to protect any tender plants by wrapping them in fleece or moving them to a sheltered spot, now is a good time to do some planting too.

Flowers to plant as we head into winter months

The expert says: “Planting spring bulbs now is a must – daffodils, tulips, and crocuses need that winter chill to bloom beautifully next year.” The more reflective winter months are also the perfect time to think about how you would like your garden to look in the future and Mr Newnes also mentions some items people might want to buy now.

In advice to those with gardens, he said: “Think ahead. Winter is ideal for assessing your garden layout.

“Sketch ideas, order seeds and consider structural changes like raised beds or new borders. Preparation now means you’ll hit the ground running when the warmer weather returns.”

He added: “It’s also the perfect time to plan outdoor shading options like pergolas or awnings. Summers are getting hotter, and these additions can make your garden more comfortable during heatwaves.”
