Gardener Monty Don has expressed his relief that BBC’s Gardeners’ World has ended filming at his beloved Longmeadow garden for the year.

The renowned television figure, who has been a part of the programme for decades, said that while he is used to the timetable, he is relieved to be able to work away from the scrutiny of the cameras.

Writing in the BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine, Monty explained that film crews won’t return until the spring and the “lack of pressure” is a welcome boost.

After discussing the work he will be doing when the film crew isn’t there, Monty added: “Should we be filming all of this? Probably.

“I would not mind at all, but there is no doubt that filming would make it all take twice as long, and add a level of scrutiny and pressure that we are happy to do without for a few winter months before the filming circus returns all too quickly next February.”

Monty also admitted the scheduling decisions can irk some of his most loyal viewers.

He continued: “This timetable has remained constant for the past 20 years or so, although I suspect that most viewers would like us to carry on throughout winter.

“However, the commissioning and scheduling of programmes moves I mysterious ways so it is unlikely to change in a hurry.”

While the gardening legend has enjoyed sustained success as a gardener and television presenter, his outdoors exploits have not been without their challenges, especially as he is at the mercy of the ever changing weather and climate in the UK.

Earlier this month he wrote on Instagram that his beloved Herefordshire home, that he shares with his wife, Sarah, and their two dogs, had been affected by flooding.

Posting on the social media platform he wrote: “There has been really bad flooding in this part of the country and homes and businesses have suffered very badly, so we are lucky that it is just the fields and garden that is wet here.”

This isn’t the first time Monty has talked about the challenges facing his garden from the changing weather. Speaking on the Talking Gardens podcast he talked about the challenges facing all gardeners during these changing times.

He said: “It’s the extremes of weather rather than the weather trends that are the problem, so we are getting very wet weather, very dry weather, very cold weather and very hot weather.

“And we’re in new territory, we’ve all been brought up and trained to find plants that fit niches. But increasingly we want plants that will adapt to extremes and that’s testing everybody.”

Monty Don and the Gardeners’ World team return to BBC Two tonight (Friday, November 21) at 8pm.
