Members of Wick and District Gardening Club heard about Frank Stephen’s 14-day fundraising walk along the John O’Groats Trail at their latest meeting.

The retired vet was guest speaker at the meeting in Wick’s Nethercliffe Hotel where he was introduced by chairperson Marney Bruce.

Frank gave a talk and presentation about his coastal trek in May 2024. Having initially set a target of £2500 he ended up raising over £35,500, including gift aid, for Alzheimer Scotland.

Frank’s wife Moira was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2019. She passed away in Seaview House care home in Wick just two weeks after Frank finished his walk.

The John O’Groats Trail is officially a 147-mile route but Frank walked a total of 174 miles, going up Fyrish Hill and Ben Bhraggie along the way.

Frank and some of the gardening club committee members were interviewed by a student from UHI who is doing a degree in filmmaking and is producing a documentary on the John O’Groats Trail.

Vice-chairperson Lilian Wark gave a vote of thanks to Frank.

Tea and coffee was served and the raffle was drawn.
