Hello! I am working on building out a vivarium that is trying to replicate South African succulent scrubland – I'm pretty set on a plan for the succulents, but I've been struggling to come up with a good semi-arid tufting grass that would survive in a terrarium.
Ideally, I am trying to stick to regionally accurate plants (at least roughly – to some degree it will always be a franken-hybrid recreation of these biomes), but I would be open to a good alternative if it is visually similar and will function better with my limitations.
This iteration will be in an 18x18x18, but I will expand it to a larger terrarium if I'm successful. Happy to share photos of my progress if anyone is interested.
Oh, and I'm located in the States, as I know there are some plants that are region locked and/or harder to acquire in the States.

I have no recommendations but a compact tufting grass would be an awesome houseplant.
How deep is your substrate? Zero clue if it could work in a terrarium but there are a lot of bunchgrasses native to western North America that stay relatively small, like 1-2 feet tall. You could try experimenting if you’re able to find a native nursery that sells them or could order some
A Delosperma species maybe? Not a grass, but could fit the look and the geography you want.
Could maybe try an Armeria. Not sure how well they’d do in enclosed conditions, but they do well in rock gardens.
