A fire broke out at a popular beer garden in East Harlem on Wednesday, destroying part of the business before spreading to a residential building.

The flames were reported at Santiago’s Beer Garden around 6 p.m., according to the FDNY. The fire at the restaurant on First Avenue quickly escalated, spreading to the second and third floors of an adjacent residential building, and later climbing to the fourth floor.

One person suffered injuries as a result of the fire, thought they refused additional medical attention at the scene.

The fire was put out by 175 responding firefighters from 45 units, the FDNY said, though it took hours to get the flames under control.

The business was closed at the time the fire started. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

“There was like a garbage can that was on fire and it made the fire spread to the inside, and then it just kept moving in,” said Matthew Fermin, the owner of the Dominican restuarant.

The Red Cross arrived at the scene to help residents from the residential building who were displaced due to the fire. At least two families were believed to have been displaced.
