With months of bitter weather ahead, people might assume they must endure a ‘dull’ winter garden. Yet, a gardener has revealed how to transform your outdoor space with ‘winter colour’ plants.

Sharing advice on TikTok under the username @gardening.with.ish, presenter and designer Gardening with Ish explained how to maximise your outdoor space year-round. In his post, Ish told viewers: “Today in the garden, I’m going to prove to you that even on the most miserable of days, you can still create amazing garden colour.

“One of the things people forget is winter colour, and there’s so much of it in planting, especially with evergreen varieties. So I’ve got a few examples for you here.

“One of them is known as the Christmas rose, which is a hellebore. These are fantastic low growers, evergreen, and have these amazing flowers. They can come in pinks, reds and even nice bright whites.

“You can go for evergreen bushes like viburnums, which have these lovely winter flowers. They’re white and pink and incredibly fragrant. And if you want to go for the classic hebe, they have amazing purple flowers which should come out in the next few weeks.”

Ish continued: “Winter hanging baskets and winter pots are an amazing way to introduce a burst of colour with a mix of different flowers and foliage. And as you remember, we made one ourselves a few weeks ago.

“But don’t worry if you don’t have the time, because a lot of garden centres these days will start to sell pre-made ones like this potted one, or even this hanging basket.”

He also pointed out that there are other simple methods to add some colour to your outdoor space, reports the Express. Ish explained: “Adding colour to your garden doesn’t just have to be the plants. Remember, there are many accessories you can have out there too, like pots. Pots are always great to add colour too, or even one of these little wall-mounted ones, which gives me a bit of a summary vibe, actually.

“Or perhaps a coloured birdhouse to keep the wildlife happy, but introduce a brightness into the garden. Quite nice that. My final suggestion is lighting.” Ish said: “So there are no ends of ways in which you can create amazing colour and vibrancy in your garden. It doesn’t have to be dull and gloom, it can look fantastic all year round, easy as that.”

Captioning his video, Ish concluded: “Cold, wet weather? Doesn’t mean your garden has to look dull. With the right plants, pots, birdhouses and lighting, you can keep the colour going all year long.”

The video earned hundreds of likes in just a few hours, with gardeners loving the helpful tips. Replying to Ish’s video, someone thanked him, writing: “Love this, thanks for the ideas Ish.”
