Jacaranda's are incredibly pretty when they flower but I have heard from various friends/people over the years that the mess that they make when the flowers drop is quite bad and some people were even happy when the tree finally died or was gone.
I was contemplating putting one in, has anyone got any experience with them?

I’ve got one. Yes, it drops a lot after it flowers, but it’s worth it to have several weeks of stunning purple over my back patio.

If people are upset their yard became beautifully purple for a couple weeks, maybe they need to look within and find their problem.

I’ve got one in my front yard. Our entire street turns purple when they flower it’s beautiful.

Just keep your car away. Otherwise, they are beautiful!

Yes. DO NOT park your car under one. They drip sap or nectar and it’s a pain to get off.

The flowers you see on the sidewalk are probably one day’s worth, judging by color. If you can get out there daily it’s no big deal. The flowers generally drop for several weeks.

They are super slippery on concrete at this stage. Next stage is purple and brown goop on the sidewalk. Also very slippery but also stinky and unsightly. It sticks to the concrete and takes effort to get the flowers up. Not just a simple sweep or rake.

Source: One of my childhood jobs was to clean the flowers of the jacaranda off of the driveway.

Gotta deal with the rain if you want to see the rainbow

they are a magnificent tree…but fuck yeah, they’re messy. Worth it? I guess so

I’d say it probably depends on what you’ve got under the tree. Flowers dropping on garden beds and lawn is fine, dropping on your car and driveway is annoying once they start to decompose.

Be mindful what’s in the ground underneath too, their roots can be problematic if you plant too close to a structure.

Make it grow in my zone and I’ll gladly take it 😭

  12. Don’t park your car under it and you’re good

Looks like a mess to look forward too. Does it smell as amazing as it looks?

  14. The mess is real, but the beauty makes it worth it in my opinion.

Having a purple yard sounds like the opposite of a problem.

    People can be nuts.

I worked for a while in a fancy-pants garden center. We carried these amazing fuscia trees. A lady was talking to me about them and said she hated them because they drop petals all over the place.

Another customer asked me for flowers that don’t attract bees.

Many customers didn’t know WHAT DIRECTION THEIR YARD FACED.

I heard a lot of stupid shit.

FYI in case you’re interested there is a white flowering variant available as well. Different but just as beautiful.

I mean, yeah, it is. It’s sticky, slippery and can cause a lot of cleanup. But it’s totally worth it, IMO. I grew up i a town known for its jacarandas and even if it’s annoying, it’s worth it every time.

It’s on the same level as any deciduous tree

Only tree I cannot abide around my home is mulberry. They grow like weeds and make a godawful mess. I’m happy they exist, they are native, and feed many birds and insects. But I don’t want one around my home.

  21. iwilldoitalltomorrow

    It’s a mess but it’s a short time

  22. its_raining_scotch

One thing no one’s mentioning about jacarandas here is that they smell kind of like cat pee. I’m not sure if it’s the sap/nectar or the what, but I always notice it. Personally, that would be my main concern over any mess it might drop periodically. They’re so pretty besides that.

I have one. I’ve never in my life thought purple flowers covering my lawn was “a mess.” They’re gone the next time I mow anyways. I should add that mine is not a prolific bloomer like the one in the photo. And it’s in my backyard.

  24. Immediate_Shock_1225

It’s so bad. Purple then brown slime on the ground. Also super slippery

I have one in my front yard. They’re beautiful yes but what you’ve heard is not wrong.

The flowers drop en masse and halfway disintegrate and turn brown when they fall so it’s not really this beautiful purple carpet and you can’t just rake them up. if you have a good mower it can suck them up but you have to do it near every other day to keep up. Also they can stain wood/cars/concrete/whatever they land on.

I love the tree, it’s just a lot of work for those few weeks when it’s dropping flowers.

[edit: as an added note, I’ve got a couple shoots im air layering currently and if you’re local to so-cal dm me and I’ll give you one for free when they get their roots going]

I would like to enjoy that “disaster” in my garden, I have had a plant for 30 years and it is barely 2 meters high and has never flowered, it is barely alive, it is too cold for it here. In winter the temperature can drop to -2°C

    Beautiful.

    Worth it.

    Get a good leaf blower/mulcher.

Thank you for having this type of tree.
