In today’s video, I’m showing you how I grow ridge gourd (turai/luffa) in my home garden—from planting the seeds, training the vine on a trellis, and caring for the plant, all the way to harvesting fresh gourds. Ridge gourd is one of the easiest vegetables to grow at home and produces abundantly with very little care.

This is my rich guard vine. One of the most producing plants each year for us. It’s also one of the most fun to harvest in my opinion because they’re all hanging down. You can just easily pluck them. It’s very satisfying. This plant is very easy to grow, but the only reason that it could be annoying is, as you can see here, it takes up a lot of space. If you don’t have a lot of space or a big trellis, this could be hard to control. You’re going to need to chop it every couple weeks or months depending on how fast your plant grows. Thankfully, this time my plant grew on a trellis and then we trained it to climb on a wall. But last year, it wasn’t on this big of a trellis and it started climbing all over our lawn and we had to trim it back every couple weeks, the leaves, or else we wouldn’t be able to mow our lawn. Also, last year, this vine produced a lot more for us. I think one of the main differences is that we put it more on the north side of our house, so it didn’t get as much sunlight as last year. And we also put it in a smaller pot, so maybe that’s why it didn’t grow as much. But nevertheless, it still gave us a lot of vegetables. We also had a bit of a late start this year and the plant got a bit diseased earlier on. So that’s why our harvest instead of August were more in September and October. Now this footage here is after our first frost in November which is why the leaves are a bit disfigured and crumbled. And the ridge guards can’t take much cold at all. So the production basically stopped after this. The guard started getting very hard before they became mature and it was almost like a hard bat. It was not edible. So that was my ridgeguard plant for this year. Even though we had less production than last year, it was still more than enough to feed all of us for a couple months.
