Is some crush stone on the outside of the wall a good idea to keep the grass out of it?

  1. Yeah. Make sure it’s a decent thickness, like 2–3 inches, so it actually blocks growth.

    I tiled the plot two years ago, and cut with river sediment, horse poo, and some ash. Then had some cover crop grow for the first year, and ripped all that up this fall.

    I see some work here. What about dimensions? Don’t you need a pathway? Using rounded stones gives it a natural look, and the height variation adds character.

    For keeping the rocks neat maybe you could add a little mulch area right outside the rocks.

    Some weeds might grow into the rocks from right outside if you’re not able to check on it very often. It isn’t that likely if you’re checking often but pulling those weeds can destabilize the rocks and suddenly you’re putting rocks back up a lot. The small urban farm I work at has barriers with big rocks for a couple of mini plots and the walls definitely stay cleaner when we mulch a little right outside.

  5. That is a helluva lot of rocks! (Some people pay good money for rocks like that.)

    This is beautiful and natural looking. I love it. Let us know how it goes.

    backbreaking work but nicely done;
    wood only lasts a few years but rocks are forever:)

  8. I love any kind of rock wall! In my experience, gravel doesn’t keep grass out, it will just make it harder to mow or rake when the grass eventually makes it through. But some people like them and they work for them. Flagstones or brick paths would work better than gravel.

  9. Rocks and gardens go together like soil and water. Nice.

    Grass will grow right up and under rock walls unfortunately, only a solid physical vertical barrier keeps out grass runners. You can still put one around the outside of the rock wall, otherwise you’ll be pulling it apart every couple years to take the grass back.

    Reaching the garden space not on the perimeter looks quite difficult. Might want to make some pathways through the middle.

    Love me some river rock bordering though!

    That was a lot of work! It looks wonderful though.
