The falling temperatures don’t just impact plants in your garden, but also those you keep indoors and in greenhouses as well. A problem that can occur with numerous different plants is fungal infections and powdery mildew.
Gardening guru and TikTok star Ish recently revealed how you can use one natural household ingredient to combat the likes of black spot and powdery mildew in your garden.
Ish wrote in the caption: “Protect your beloved plants against fungal infections or powdery mildew with a clever home remedy of bicarbonate of soda and water.
“This home made anti fungal spray will help remove the fungal infections and protect against future ones too.”

Thankfully, you won’t require any harsh chemicals and commercial products, but simply a spray bottle, water and some bicarbonate of soda, reports the Express. Combining water and bicarbonate of soda will produce a natural anti-fungal remedy that can be applied to plants.
In a spray bottle, mix one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda per 500ml of water. Fix the lid of the bottle and give the mixture a thorough shake.
Treat your plants with the remedy once a week if they’re battling powdery mildew or fungal infections. Spray the blend over the infected area, ensuring it’s thoroughly soaked. It can also be employed as a protective measure.
Be sure to reapply the remedy to plants after rainfall to help prevent the fungus from spreading. Ish explained: “However the problem is usually caused by humidity and excess moisture, so if it gets a little too thick in there, don’t be afraid to thin out the area, remove the affected leaves, and still add a little spray just to keep it happy.”

This remedy creates a natural antifungal spray which can help tackle mould, black spot, and powdery mildew. As an antifungal treatment, baking soda alters the leaf’s surface pH, making it less acidic and more difficult for black spot fungus to develop.
To stop fungal diseases, such as black spot, and powdery mildew from developing or returning, the Royal Horticultural Society explained that the most effective form of prevention is by avoiding pests, diseases and weeds, as well as maintaining good garden hygiene, and introducing “natural enemies”.
It’s also advisable to tackle the issue before it can spread, particularly during the colder months.
The RHS encouraged gardeners to gather and destroy any fallen leaves during the autumn, and to also remove and dispose of any leaves that remain on the plant during the winter months. Gardeners should also steer clear of using fungicides, as this could reduce biodiversity, impact soil health, and have harmful effects on the environment.
