I got them all from a seed pack. All the seeds sprouted as beets for the exception of this one and one other one. What plant is this?

this is also a beet, just a white beet variant. possibly an avalanche beet but it’s hard to say. white beets typically have a more mild, straightforward and semi-sweet flavor.

kind of looks like a turnip or possibly a watermelon radish.

Fun fact, white beets have more sugar in them. When Napoleon was under a British blockade and couldn’t get the usual Caribbean sugar onto the plates of France, he tasked his government to come up with something. What could they grow in the much colder France? Not sugar cane, it needs tropical temperatures. Their solution? The sugar beet. Today about 30% of the sugar we consume is from white beets like yours.

Just chop it up, put it in a salad raw and see how it tastes……

Could be a weed or mislabel and check the leaves; beet seedlings are rounded and slightly crinkled.

Before i saw seriouslysearcy’s comment, i was just gonna say i thought that was a deformed onion, but onions don’t have those fancy leaves. Thanks seriouslysearcy for telling me what it is!

He majority of table sugar in the United States comes from white sugar beets. My husband used to work in the sugar beet industry.

You can cook the leaves too, treat them like collards or spinach.
