Butler County celebrated a milestone in local gardening education on Nov. 6, as the Butler County Extension held a graduation ceremony for the first class of Master Gardener volunteers. The program trains volunteers to connect Alabama residents with gardening information and educational opportunities, even for those without prior expertise.
“And today, we did the graduation for the first Butler County Extension Master Gardeners class,” said Carmen Flammini, a regional agent for the Alabama Extension Cooperative System. “There are 14 new members, and they were in training for 13 weeks. They did online training, but also they did in-person training every Thursday for 13 weeks. They were trained in horticulture, soil, weeds and a little entomology.” Flammini added that graduates will be able to help the community with horticultural topics and provide education in gardening.
Sharlean Briggs, Butler County Extension Coordinator, said she is proud of the program’s first class.
