The scheme celebrates the impact of Men’s Sheds across the country in reducing loneliness, improving wellbeing and strengthening communities.

Pete Hill, chair and founding member of Letchworth Men’s Shed, said: “Being shortlisted for a national award is an endorsement of the valuable hard work of our volunteer members.”

Working alongside garden volunteers, a team of seven older men from the Shed spent the winter repairing, replacing and painting wooden planters and garden surrounds. They also designed and built a new wooden pergola over a bench.

Paul McKenna, estate manager at the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, praised the group’s work.

He said: “From the moment I met the Letchworth Men’s Shed team onsite, their professionalism, craftsmanship and genuine care for community spaces shone through.

“Refurbishing the planters and installing a beautiful new pergola has transformed the area – honouring the dedication of the Wynd Community Gardeners & Growers and enhancing a space cherished by many.

“Their shortlisting for the 2025 Men’s Sheds Award in the Community Project category is a truly well-earned recognition.”

As finalists, Shed members will travel to the House of Commons on November 27 to find out if they have won the UK Men’s Sheds Association 2025 Community Project Award.

Wynd Community Garden coordinators Mandy, Tasmin and Melanie also recognised the value of the Shed’s contribution.

They said: “From its creation, the community garden has been shaped by local volunteers who are passionate about building a space where people can connect with nature and learn about growing food.

“We are deeply grateful to the Shed team for their invaluable help, expertise and time in restoring the Wynd Garden woodwork.

“The new, beautifully crafted pergola has added a much-needed focal point and a welcome place to sit and take in the garden.”

A garden party to celebrate the refurbishment will take place on December 12 at 11am, with coffee and cake provided by the BakeHouse.
