I resent the idea that you should never spend money on a garden that isn't yours. It's an investment into my happiness, and when I move away some day, I'll be leaving with a lot of knowledge to use in my own garden. This garden has brought me so much joy this year…and next year is going to be even better!

And yes, I have it in writing (multiple times) that I can do whatever TF I want with the garden. Apartment managers are good friends of mine & have said multiple times that they love seeing how much nicer it looks now ☺️

  1. Cool. A flowering vine into the chain link could be a nice natural backdrop

Big improvement! Giant sunflowers are awesome! Have you thought about a rose bush or two? Love rose bushes, they refuse to die around here (zone 8a)

i had the same advice given to me. i am renting a half of a duplex town home and the landlord said i can do whatever I want with the landscape. i created a moss/shade garden, planted over 20 native plants, 2 pawpaws, and much more to come. why would i waste my precious time on this earth not exploring the beauty of nature and all the ecological value i could restore just in my front and backyard.

the person who gave me that advice also told me to not put in a whole lot of “sweat equity”. to hell with that idea, cool things don’t make themselves.

edit: is that a peony on 16/17? looks beautiful.

I need a wide shot of the whole shebang!

  6. as many already told you vine on the chain link is a good idea. Just an advice you’re near a railway line so two thing to remember:

*probably a height limit on trees will be present, check your local laws

*railway operator often spray herbicides this varies a lot from country to country and even operator to operator, so you should check this particular what it uses.

*if you mind the noise look into sound absorbing barrier or plant that do the that, but plant barrier will occupy much space

    Have fun with your project

  7. Love that your Landlord is letting you do this. With that said, email them before you actually do anything though so that you have proof of approval in case they try anything. This has happened to one of my friends before. She got permission, put a bunch of time and money into it, then got evicted because she made “unauthorized changes” to the property.

Shoutout to your landlord for giving the freedom to do as you please 🏡🪴

  10. Wonderful. What a lovely dog and blue butterfly. Ask if you can get chickens!!

I would look for something evergreen for that fence line to give some privacy and maybe a little acoustic help. The sunflowers are nice but not blocking enough of the train tracks.

  12. We move a lot due to my husband’s work. I gardened in every home we stayed at and left each place better/prettier than we found it. While we were there it was our home. I never did anything to upset the landlord, and always got our deposit back.

Good on you providing some beauty and habitat in your wake!!

Zinnias and cosmos are cheap and easy annuals to grow from seed, and easy to collect seeds at the end of the summer for planting next spring. If you do it right, you need to buy the seeds only once
