I could really use some guidance on planning out a backyard overhaul. My property sits on a pretty extreme slope, and the builders did not do the best job with their earthwork. The centipede grass they put down has completely failed in backyard, and the upper portion along my fence line has basically turned into a muddy pit where my dogs run. Photos are attached for reference.
My goal is to divide the yard with a chain link fence so I can keep a “people side” that is level and usable, while leaving the steeper portion to the dogs. I am imagining some combination of wooden retaining walls, terracing, and strategic grading on the people side. The challenge is that the slope is steeper than it looks in photos, and I am honestly a bit overwhelmed trying to figure out a logical plan of attack.
I got a few quotes early on, but everything came back 50k-plus for what was basically “one retaining wall and some dirt,” and that is outside my budget, especially without a thoughtful design behind it.
This may end up being a multi year DIY plus occasional contractor project, and I am fine with that. I just need help figuring out how to start: how to plan, how to break the project into reasonable phases, and what the best practices are for dealing with a sloped yard like this.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? Any advice on how you approached designing, staging, and executing a project like this would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
