We bought a 1930s 3 bed semi detached. Previous owners were nice English couple in there 80s. The old man maintained the garden beautifully all by himself. Before and after pictures can tell. I am definetely no where close to his level of DIY. It hurts me to see the condition of garden now. We both are working and barely get anytime other than weekends to mow the lawn, blow the leaves and remove the weeds. Please advise. I am a quick learner so I can learn as well if there is anything I can do to modernize it.

    Looks pretty good to me.
Personally I leave the leaves as the look nice and they add nutrients back into the ground when they break down.
I’d plant bushes or similar to cover the fence

Don’t stress over nit cutting lawns. Long grass looks cool, just give it structure

This is a lovely garden with an interesting layout!
    – For a more straight forward garden, I’d keep the trees but you could remove some of the shrubs and plants underneath and have a larger lawn. Though this would still involve mowing the lawn, though you could leave the leaves because they’ll just break down over winter and provide nutrients to your garden.
    – If it was me, I’d be tempted to have no lawn. Put a plant border to the left and have meandering pathways around the garden to two or three seating areas. I’d choose contemporary slabs, gravel, chairs and tables, and plants which don’t need much TLC and which don’t grow too quickly that they’d need chopping back every year. This would require some time and a budget setting it up though so maybe not suitable at this time.
Good luck and enjoy your green space!

    Just different time of year.
It will look beautiful again in spring/summer. Just cut the grass when spring arrives and weed the flower beds and that’s pretty much it! The plants they’ve left will bloom every year, you could chop back the magnolia a little so it’s not as leggy but it can be personal preference.
