I always recommend to pick up a submerged rotten leaf or stick when starting an ecosphere. Just ONE! Since most critters snack on detritus, as in rotten stuff, the nastier the leaf the better. Many call it polluted. I’ll post a picture of the entire jar with the leaf in the comments.

If its an enclosed system there will sooner or later be dead parts of plants anyways.

Adding dry leaves at the start is very benefical for establishment of critters.
Even animals that dont feed on leaves directly appreciate the bacteria and microalgae feeding off them.

I actually dont use anything else in moina/copepods cultures – just water (shallow, so its oxygenated by surface gas exchange) and a substrate of dry poplar/oak leaves.

the soil in my larger aquatic ecosphere is mostly detritus. Maybe that’s why I’ve got so many different kinds of critters in there!
