The Wonder Gardens in Bonita Springs is revitalizing a decades-old treasure. More than three years after Hurricane Ian caused devastation, the gardens have been undergoing renovations to restore what they call an “oasis of old Florida.”
From alligators to colorful birds, the gardens have been a staple in Bonita Springs for 90 years, surviving countless storms and changes over the decades. Now, the nonprofit is launching its biggest transformation yet, which includes a new event building and a state-of-the-art animal care center.
“We’ve lost so many Florida attractions, really, across the state of Florida,” said Neil Anderson, Wonder Gardens president and CEO. “You know that kind of went into disrepair, and then all it takes is a storm like that to really take you out. So we’re building is a sustainable Wonder Gardens, one that’s gonna be truly a reflection of the community.”
The project, called “Renew the Wonder,” is not just about repairing damage. It’s about reimagining the future while honoring the past. With the 90th anniversary approaching, staff and volunteers are more motivated than ever.
“It’s an endeavor that we want to leave a legacy,” said Trish Leonard, a Wonder Gardens donor. “A legacy that we have done something and everything we could to keep something like the Bonita Wonder Gardens here in our city.”
The Wonder Gardens will celebrate its 90th anniversary with a special event on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. Tickets are available on their website.
