MIgardener: These Will Solve Our Mosquito Problem AND Feed Our Family!
The mosquitos were terrible this year. With organic options a focal point for us, we decided to enlist the help of 150 yellow perch to help control the problem and hopefully feed our family in the process!
Pro tip for when you add more fish ect. Let the bags sit in the water maybe 15-20 minutes before putting them in helps them not go into a "shock" from the change of water. Less likely to lose some then :). I'd tie the bags to something of course so that they dont drift off into the middle of pond though haha
Might be an idea to supplement the fish with some food, i would reach back out to the place you bought them and try to get some of it. This way they will have a reliable food source going through the winter.
Hi Luke. I grew up on Detroit's East side. About a block from where Whittier crosses I-94. I like your channel. Travis from Lazy Dog Farms (a south Georgia lad) has mentioned you several times on his channel. I live in Jensen Beach FL. Zone 10b. Way different than Michigan. I went to my 50th high school reunion this past June 2025. Whenever I visit Michigan, I gotta eat some fried yellow perch. I also like to eat at that great waterfront fish restaurant in Marine City. When I was there this year, I made it a point to visit your store. You weren't there, but the lady was very nice and chatted with me for 10 minutes. I tried to buy a MIgardener shirt, but the stock was low and they didn't have one my size at the time (Large Mens). I will check out your website for a shirt and maybe some seeds. Getting ready to plant my vegetable garden after Thanksgiving. I am very happy to see you with your new big farm. My Dad's Aunt Olive Baumgarten (sp?) had a 100 acre or so farm in Romeo, I think. I like St. Clair County. Thx Luke. Chuck in Jensen Beach.
Good to know about dry summer causing early dormancy. My two 10 year old apple trees have shed their leaves the last three years just as the fruit is near ripening. Thought each year they would die off over winter but they haven't. North ohio here with sandy base soil but I chip mulched for ten years so the top siol is rich. But have not mulched for last three years. Time for a chip drop and a water plan for those bigger trees. Thanks Luke.

Fish, food and fertilizer next!
My lilac did the same thing for two years in a row.

Easier to separate the seeds when you swish them in water…. seeds float. Flesh sinks… JS in case you didn't know
Thanks putting your hands in the pumpkin guts for us Luke!!
They would love some mullberry leaves to eat, and dried duck weed.
Shiners are gorgeous fish.
cool
That was awesome, good luck with the pond!
Best hang a yellow light over the pond in mosquito season. Brings them to the surface to feed on the larvae

Keep in mind you will loose some of those fish to predators such as Heron and Racoons, etc.
