The next monthly meeting of the Oakdale Garden Club is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 10 a.m. at the Community United Methodist Church, 1480 Poplar St., Oakdale. All gardening enthusiasts in the area are welcome to attend.
The featured speaker will be Pam Grassmidt from the Modesto Bonsai Club. “Introduction to Bonsai , a Living Art” is the topic for Grassmidt’s talk, and she will also bring some bonsai examples to show. Questions are welcome at the end of the presentation and the speaker plans to provide some information on bonsai collections in California open to the public.
New members and guests are always welcome at the club meetings. The garden club has many opportunities to join in activities in the community.
Recently, several garden club members spent their Monday downtown pot maintenance time planting 200 daffodil bulbs at the cowboy statue adjacent to the Oakdale Cowboy Museum on East F Street. The flowers should start peeking out in February surrounding the cowboy statue. Working on the project were Diane Coit, Patty Mayfield, Michael Moore, and Gary Jones.
Also getting attention recently was the Veteran’s Memorial at Fish Park in Oakdale, which the Garden Club maintains. In honor of Veterans Day, Garden Club member Carol Todd made sure that red, white and blue flowers were planted. To celebrate the day, small flags were also placed around the flower bed for Nov. 11.
Representatives of the Garden Club participated in the Veterans Day ceremony at Fish Park; they wore their green aprons and passed out cards with red poppy pins, the card including an explanation regarding the symbolism of the poppy.
