We moved into this property a year ago. Our lot is mostly oak with some maples and shagbark hickory mixed in. I’ve started to add smaller understory natives like red bud, red osier dogwood, and spice bush. We are slowly working on lining our paths with deadfall.

I want to talk turkey with you! I am so jealous! I grew up on a bird farm and the turkeys were one of my favorites. They are so ugly up close, but they are friendly and, you can teach them songs…sort of.

For some reason if you sang a line of a song to them, they will reply with two gobbles. One day I was out feeding them and we were singing the blue Danube waltz…. It went like this:

    The blue Danube waltz,

    Gob-ble Gob-ble,

    Doo doo doot da doo,

    Gob-ble gob-ble.

And I turn around and my dad is standing there watching me with his mouth open.

He left without saying anything but that night he said, “You sure have a way with those birds.”

:0) Turkeys are awesome. Ugly, but awesome.

beautiful property, and i love the leaf litter! just had to drive by assholes blowing the leaves around their lawn, disrupting all the bugs trying to overwinter and also accomplishing nothing 🤦‍♀️
