Hey there. Welcome to the garden. Today I’m up here on the the porch patio garden. Um and I’m building a winter home for this Chicago hearty fig. So this fig is pretty cool. It’s um a hearty fig. So it actually can live outside in my zone 7B winters just fine. It’s doing really well. This is its first year. It was a bare root fig and it actually has some little fruits on there. You can see there’s a bunch of little fruit growing. Um, and it’s looking pretty healthy. I’ve got it in this little pot, but I feel like longterm it’s probably not the the best situation for it. These plants can get about 12 ft tall. Um, and they will, depending on how cold your winter is, they will die like all the way back to the ground um, and regenerate every year. But I’ve got an upgrade for it. So, I’m actually going to be building one of the VGO selfwatering rolling planters because that way I can roll this into uh the garage if I need to when it gets really cold. Like if we have a really really cold snap, um I can just put it in the garage and just give it that much more protection and also give it a really big soil reservoir so it’ll be more happy kind of like permanently. So, I’m going to go ahead and build that um planter for it now. [Music] [Applause] How fun is this? I need to top it off with a tiny bit more soil. And I do have to decide if I want to put any like flowers in. Definitely in the new like new season next spring I will put tons of flowers in there with it. Um but for right now I think I’m just going to leave it there. Uh pretty cool. Kind of fun. Um to have like a whole tree right here. Um and this is definitely enough space like that big will be able to grow for years and years and years. And it’s super easy to move. These wheels are really great. It’s very light. It’ll be easy to move around. Um, I’m really thrilled with that super super cool container. I will put a link um to it in the description. I do have a discount code with them. Um, and and I use all their products um all over the garden. So, I really love that. That is super cool. Now that I did that, I’m looking at my container garden up here and realizing that I need to make some updates. It needs it needs a refresh. It needs a new breath of life. Your garden looks like right now. Of course, we got the bunny hutch. And we just got like a few random things. Some old basil, actually some Swiss chard, which will grow all winter. But I might need to just move stuff around and do some repotting, do some reorganizing, I think. Um, I have this container of mint, which I do, this one looks a little bit funky, but I do want to keep this because, um, the mint’s going to be a really good like the bunnies absolutely love mint. It’s going to be a good food source for them. And so, even though it doesn’t look good right now at the end of the season, I know it’s going to look good coming, you know, in the spring. And at least it’s green. But we need to redo the other um the other containers. See though, they love this. Want some? So, I’m going to go walk around the garden. See if I can steal steal a few things. You just need to like move some things around, steal some containers to some different places. And I do have some pansies. So, maybe we’ll get some maybe we’ll just get this container garden refreshed and updated. Hey there. So, it is the next day. I’m out here and I grabbed a few things. is I got a few cabbages and I’m just going to try to repot some of these containers and then probably throw in um the cabbages I’m going to leave. So, these are actually my pear trees which this one or I mean nectarine trees. This one got eaten by deer and like I’m really hoping it makes it eventually. I want to repot it into this container. So, I may do that. I may run and grab um some like more potting soil and fill this up. I’m not quite sure because the caliber koas they don’t look great but they’re still like kind of pretty and so I’m tempted to just leave them and enjoy them for a little longer. And then we’ve got some cabbages and I’m going to grab a couple containers that I have of boxwoods and we’re just going to put Yeah, we’re just going to put some of these containers together. All right. Well, here we are. Patunia was causing a little bit of trouble, but it just looks a little bit better. Um, I didn’t end up putting too I probably should put some more pansies around the trees, but I thought it just it just looks fresh. It’s just nice. Um, you know, I put a pumpkin here. I might grab I’ve got a couple little pumpkins. I might grab a couple for on here. I do have to keep this tarp for to keep the rain out. So, that’s a little bit a little bit annoying. But, there we go. We got some cabbages. Just some little light things. nothing like a box would to also just keep it looking cute. Idea as well, I didn’t fill these containers up too much is that I may come in around Christmas and put in like some some just evergreens. Um just put in some pine branches or something or stick some twigs in. So, um I may add that or if there’s little pine trees on sale, you know, I may add a little like couple little like Christmas trees out here. Um but I’m just going to hang out now and clean up. help me cleaning up. Miss Gersham is being very brave right now. She usually doesn’t like to come out. She like sticks close. They’re really happy cuz I cleaned out one of my containers that had basil. Oops. Very careful, which is good. Um, so yeah, I did decide that I’m going to keep quite a few containers up here. Not like a full garden, but just a lot of my containers. And then I’ll do a couple in the back. Um, but it’s nice to be able to really look at the containers. It’s just so fun. And so I am going to do quite a lot of that. Um, plus it gives me a reason to get out here, let the buddies run around and do all that. So I’m just going to clean up the mess cuz of course there’s a mess. Put out some more pumpkins. And yeah, thanks so much for watching. I will talk to you again soon. Bye.

Good idea with the fig tree. Usually you cut the roots on one side each fall and lay it down in a trench, then cover it. Or wrap it with burlap and leaves. Your way is much easier.
Things in containers are not as cold hardy as plants in the ground. It is a good idea to bring the fig into the garage when it gets really cold. Chicago Hardy is a good tasting fig also. I would think the Chicago Hardy would be ok in the ground most years. You could always make a cutting and plant it in the ground. Most varieties of figs are very easy to root, including the Chicago Hardy.
Love the container for the fig tree.
That container. Yes.. I love that !
What a fantastic fall refresh! Thanks so much for including us in your project and sharing your creativity with everyone! Happy gardening!
