This appeal is part of a wider monitoring effort to safeguard the Isle of Wight’s red squirrel population.

Becky Watts is conducting a comprehensive survey of woodlands over one hectare to determine the presence of these squirrels.

Owners of such land are asked to consent to the survey by contacting wightsquirrels@hotmail.com.

However, urban areas, particularly Ryde, are now being focused on due to occasional sightings of young squirrels moving through the town.

The presence of large trees in many gardens is believed to potentially contribute to the overall habitat of the red squirrels.

Garden owners are therefore encouraged to report any sightings of squirrels in 2025 in Ryde.

The date of sightings, an estimated date if unsure, along with the location’s postcode and the squirrel’s coat colour, should be included in the report.

This information will help in identifying if the same squirrel is travelling around the area.
