Winter is almost here, bringing in freezing temperatures.
Colder temperatures mean the greenhouses are surrounded with plastic to keep the plants warm.
Nursery manager, Rachel Bond says keeping plants healthy in the wintertime is a busy task and that this cold snap has already had an impact on business.
“This is the coldest that we’ve had since last year. We do slow down a little bit when it gets cold because people just don’t like to be out in the cold weather,” Bond said. “The trees and the shrubs, they started to drop their leaves so you may notice a lot of leaves falling after this cold snap.”
Bond said her crape myrtles, magnolia and cypress trees are cold hardy plants, this means they can withstand cold temperatures.
She said tropical plants don’t do well in cold weather; they could die if temperatures dropped to 40° or below.
“We run heaters as we’ve protected all the plants all the ones that are not cold hardy we brought in the greenhouse,” she said.
Kiln resident Adam Jablonowski said he has greenhouse at his home. He says even his outdoor plants need protection.
“If it gets down below freezing, it’s a struggle to keep a place warm enough for the plants,” Jablonowski said.
He said he covers up the plants that stay outside with sheets, and pins them down.
“Mulching helps making sure they’re watered and anything that needs to be covered,” Bond said. “You can cover it or bring it inside. Otherwise, the hardier plants will come back in the springtime after the freeze.”
Bond said it’s important to be proactive when it comes to protecting your plants.
