Alright… ready for a coolass reddit story?!!

Some months back, I was listening to Native Plants, Healthy Planet while I was putzing in the gardens and I heard a reddit username that I recognized. They had been discussing this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/NativePlantGardening/comments/1kr9vh6/welp_my_native_garden_at_work_has_been_destroyed/

I decided to go ahead and message u/robsc_16 and let him know. He was thankful and later sent me a message about this post! https://www.reddit.com/r/NativePlantGardening/comments/1llyj9p/update_to_the_post_welp_my_native_garden_at_work/

Kind of blew my mind how great it worked out…but the story gets even cooler. The other day I got a message from him telling me he and skunk u/SHOWTIME316 were on the podcast! I have to say those two fellas have some Crime Pays, Botany doesn't vibes. Definitely worth a listen. You'll get a laugh and learn a little more about the folks that keep this sub the best place to be on the whole internet as far as I'm concerned: https://bleav.com/shows/native-plants-healthy-planet/episodes/r-nativeplantgardening-with-rob-and-friend/

Now for the end of the story…I had reupped on some tallamy books for the little native resource library a month ago, but had not yet put them in the library… This one made it into the Homegrown National Park calendar actually. Another little twist to the reddit/native plant journey…so many good stories actually. https://www.reddit.com/r/NativePlantGardening/comments/1ezfbwp/quick_flower_fix_cue_to_care_coming_along_lake/

…so I had a couple books sitting around. I found out last week that Tallamy was going to be giving a talk in person a couple miles from me…however, due to a funeral service, I had to skip the event…but thanks to an awesome cousin that I call my native plant sherpa (dude has kept me in steady supply of plants since he winter sows the shit out of stuff and has super great understanding of local flora [dude teaches the stuff at the community college]), I was able to get a copy in his hands, and he was able to get the new Tallamy book signed. u/robsc_16 it will be in the mail this week along with a couple stickers.

u/showtime316 dm me your info and I can send you an unsigned copy…I mean, I can sign it, but what is the point of that? Will send you a few stickers too if you'd like.

Mods, you all are just wonderful people. I cannot even express how thankful I am that I discovered this sub a few years ago. It has been instrumental in my native plant understandings…everything from networking, to chasing legislation in IL, to giving me the confidence to build and promote the little library, to getting the 1/2 acre plot in the park, to the whole cans for plants thing that actually led my oldest with a super cool internship in world class cancer research lab, to meeting half a dozen redditors in real life from Illinois to Pennsylvania, to even connecting with the author Nancy Lawson… ….Pull all the reddit threads folks…neat stuff happens and we can spread a little joy and love and knowledge.

The native plant community is alive in real life and we all need to get out there and meet people and make stuff happen. I guarantee, at a minimum, you'll end up with plants or seeds for free… The moral of the story is when we get with others, good stuff just bubbles up, and connections develop and shit just sort of happens!

THANK YOU MODS and really thanks to the whole community!

Like all good biomes, we’re strongest when our roots work together. Glad to hear we have some stellar anchor species in the flowerbed.

It’s awesome how it all came together! Especially since it all started off with a terrible day for me. This community really can do some amazing things by turning a negative into a positive. I said it on the podcast, and I’ll say it again here, none of this would have happened without you u/jjmk2014!

I appreciate the kind words for us mods. It’s a thankless job for the most part, but it’s great seeing all the good this community does for individuals and whole groups of people.
