Hi all, bit by bit slowly turning my yard into all natives. I have this sad patch of grass/ catpisswood and need some ideas.

This area faces West and sees minimal sunlight, some during afternoon/evening. Heavy-ish clay soil. Not picky on species really, I do already have a large native shrub row in the back that has viburnums, chockberries, elderberries, and a nine bark.

The grill will be moved and behind it is a lattice which could also be utilized. This area has a minor southward slope so water should not sit in this area much.

Thanks for reading and any recommendations!

I’d probably take a flat shovel at a low angle to basically scalp off the grass and then cover it over winter to make sure the roots die. Since the soils are clayey, you can run over the area with a rototiller to loosen it up. Passiflora would be a good candidate for that lattice. I’d mix wildflowers with some grasses to get the most ecological benefit. You can go on Prairie Moon and filter down to PA to see a good amount of plants that are native to your area
