A man was left gobsmacked after he stumbled upon a ‘forgotten by time’ metal box while doing up his garden. He shared on Reddit how he unearthed the large object and immediately thought it might be a grave.

The resident posted: “I think I’ve found a grave in my garden. There was a chapel on this site according to 1850-ish OS maps. I’ve contacted the council-affiliated archaeology group but had no response yet.” Despite reaching out to the police about his eerie find, they apparently showed no interest in probing further unless bones were discovered.

In his quest for answers, he continued: “I sent a web chat to the police, who sent two coppers round within two hours to my surprise.

“They didn’t know what to do with it and seemed satisfied, unless I found any bones that is. Now I have some time just to do some digging this is what I’ve found.

“The structure is around 3-4 feet deep. About one and a half feet down the walls of the structure get much thicker.

“The bottom is solid and connected to the walls, so essentially the contents are self-contained within it. Any ideas?”.

While some Reddit users reckon it’s nothing more than a septic tank, others are keen to dig deeper into whether it could indeed be a grave.

One user queried: “What orientation is it? That’s a good way of working out if a grave or not. On a side note I once found a human skull while digging.

“I made a hole in the cranium by mistake suck my hand in a felt teeth and eye sockets. What a fantastic day. Archaeologists came and dug it up.”

In response, he added: “Wow that’s mental! It’s facing East West.”

Another user chimed in with: “Traditionally churches buried people facing East, towards Jerusalem.”

Yet another user suggested: “Open it. You either find bones you can piece together again to make a skeleton friend or you hit a cesspit. Either way it’s a win for us.”

A different user expressed concern: “I’m actually a bit concerned that you haven’t found a skeleton because the only possible explanation is that the corpse turned into a zombie and is currently at large.”

Finally, one user declared: “As a specialist in WW2 and cold war era bunkers I recognise this is most definitely, 100% a hole in the ground.

“Keep going and report back your findings, this could be the greatest thing you have ever done in the history of you!”.
